The AI-Powered Job Search: Beyond the Resume

Job postings are written in HR language. Paste one into ChatGPT and ask: "What are the 5 most important skills this employer is really looking for? What keywords should my resume and cover letter include? What might the interview questions be?" In 30 seconds, you know exactly what to emphasize — and you're no longer guessing what they want.

This is the most underused free tool in the job search. Tell ChatGPT: "Act as a hiring manager interviewing me for a [job title] position. Ask me one question at a time. After each answer I give, tell me what was strong and what I could improve." It will run a full mock interview with you — patiently, privately, as many times as you want. Nervous about a specific question, like explaining a gap in your work history? Practice exactly that until your answer feels natural.

Before an interview, use Perplexity (it cites sources) to ask: "What does [company] do, who are their customers, and what has been in the news about them this year?" Then ask ChatGPT: "Based on this, give me 3 smart questions to ask at the end of my interview." Candidates who ask informed questions stand out immediately — and now that takes 10 minutes instead of an evening.

After the interview: "Write a short, warm thank-you email to [name] for the [job title] interview. Mention that I enjoyed our conversation about [topic]." When the offer comes: "The offer is $X. Research says the typical range for this role in my city is higher. Write me a polite, confident script for asking for $Y." Most people never negotiate because they don't know what to say. Now you have the words.

AI should sharpen your story, not invent one. Never let it add skills you don't have or experience you didn't earn — you will be asked about it in the interview, and it unravels fast. The goal is to present the real you at your absolute best. That's not cheating. That's what confident, prepared candidates have always done.
